How to estimate tile for your project

Buying tile is really two numbers: the area to cover and a waste allowance for cuts, breakage, and future repairs. Enter your square footage, keep a 10 percent waste factor for a straight layout, and the calculator tells you how many boxes to buy.

Bump the waste to 15 percent for diagonal or herringbone layouts, or for rooms with lots of jogs and corners. Always buy from the same batch or dye lot so the color matches, and keep a few spare tiles for repairs.

Frequently asked questions

How much extra tile should I buy for waste?
Add 10 percent for a standard straight or grid layout, and 15 percent for diagonal, herringbone, or rooms with lots of cuts. The extra covers breakage, bad cuts, and a few spares for future repairs.
How do I know how many square feet a box of tile covers?
It is printed on the box, and it varies by tile size. Set the box coverage above to match your product, and the calculator will size the box count to your room.
