How long does a central AC unit last?
A central air conditioner typically lasts about 15 to 20 years, and some well-maintained units reach 25. Carrier puts most systems in that 15 to 20 year window with proper care, while a neglected unit can fail closer to 10 to 12 years. Your actual number depends on how hard the system runs, your climate, whether it was sized and installed correctly, and whether it gets basic annual service. If yours is past 15 and showing weak cooling, rising bills, or repeated repairs, it is time to plan ahead rather than wait for it to quit on the hottest day of the year.
How long each system type lasts

Heat pumps use the same core technology as a central AC, so they age similarly, but they tend to run year round for both heating and cooling. That extra run time often pushes their real-world lifespan toward the lower end. Mini splits, according to Carrier, commonly run 10 to 15 years, with high-end inverter models reaching 20 or more thanks to variable-speed compressors that avoid hard on-off cycling.
What shortens or extends the life
Two identical units in two different homes can be years apart at the end. These are the factors that decide where yours lands.
- Annual maintenance. Carrier calls yearly professional service the number one way to make an AC last. A dirty system works harder, which strains every component and leads to early failure.
- Filter changes. A clogged filter restricts airflow and forces the system to work harder and use more electricity. Carrier recommends replacing a 1-inch pleated filter every 30 to 90 days, and a 4-inch media filter every 6 to 12 months.
- Correct sizing and installation. A unit that is oversized or poorly installed short-cycles or runs under strain. Proper sizing by a certified technician is part of why some systems last much longer than others.
- Climate and run time. Units in hot, humid southern climates rack up far more running hours than those in mild northern ones. Lower thermostat settings over many years add to the strain.
- Coastal salt air. Saltwater spray near the coast corrodes the outdoor unit faster. Regular coil cleaning and debris removal help protect it.
- Neglect. Skip the upkeep and Carrier notes the lifespan can drop to roughly 10 to 12 years.

Signs your AC is failing
A central AC usually gives you warning before it stops. Carrier lists these as the main signals.
- Frequent breakdowns. Needing a repair every cooling season is a strong sign the system is wearing out.
- Rising energy bills. A failing unit burns more electricity to deliver the same cooling.
- Weak or uneven cooling. Rooms that will not reach the set temperature, or big swings between rooms, point to a system losing capacity.
- Loud noises. Grinding, banging, or rattling from the unit suggests worn or failing internal parts.
- Age past 15 years. On its own, age is a leading predictor. Most systems are near the end by 15 to 20 years.
- R-22 refrigerant. If your unit was made in 2009 or earlier it likely uses R-22, and that matters for cost, as covered below.
The R-22 refrigerant issue on older units
If your AC is more than about 15 years old, it may run on R-22 refrigerant, and that changes the repair math. The EPA stopped the production and import of R-22 as of January 1, 2020, because it depletes the ozone layer. Trane notes that new residential AC units and heat pumps using R-22 have not been sold in the US since 2010.
Keeping an existing R-22 system is allowed, and the EPA does not require you to replace it. Servicing it relies on recycled and reclaimed supply, which Trane reports can run roughly 60 to 250 dollars per pound and is getting scarcer. If an R-22 unit springs a refrigerant leak, the repair can cost enough to make replacement the smarter move.
Repair or replace
When something breaks, the age of the unit usually decides the call. Carrier’s rule of thumb is that if a repair would cost around 50 percent or more of a new system, replacement is typically the better value. A single fix on a unit still in its first several years is usually worth doing. Repeated repairs on a unit past 15 years, or any major repair on an R-22 system, generally point toward replacing it.
Efficiency changes the picture even when the unit still runs. Energy Star suggests considering replacement once an AC or heat pump is more than 10 years old, and says a correctly installed high-efficiency unit can save up to 20 percent on heating and cooling costs. A very old, low-SEER unit can cost you money every month, so a newer high-SEER system can pay back part of its price in lower bills over time.
