How to estimate sand for your project

Sand is used as a leveling bed under pavers, as sandbox fill, and as general fill. Enter your area and depth and this calculator returns cubic yards, an approximate weight in tons for bulk orders, and a 0.5 cubic foot bag count.

A paver bedding layer is typically 1 inch of sand over a compacted gravel base. Do not use bedding sand as your structural base, that job belongs to crushed paver base, which compacts and locks in place.

Frequently asked questions

How many tons of sand are in a cubic yard?
Dry sand weighs about 1.35 tons per cubic yard. Wet or compacted sand weighs more, so if you are ordering bulk by weight, treat this as a planning figure and round up slightly.
How thick should the sand layer be under pavers?
Use about 1 inch of bedding sand over a compacted base. More than that lets pavers settle unevenly. Enter 1 inch above to size a bedding layer.
